How do you track your travel ideas and goals?

Hey guys - my friends and I have been making plans to visit a few cities in the USA. We've created a handful of whatsapp groups to keep track of restaurants to visit, tourist sites to see, etc, but are looking for a tool to be a bit more organized. I've looked at a few tools like TripAdvisor (not bad, but it's less designed to compile ideas and moreso designed to save and eventually buy tours), Wanderlist (half-assed at best), and TripIt (also not bad, but moreso for creating solid itineraries than any kind of idea storage).

What do you guys use? Are there any niche apps out there that could store location-specific notes on restaurants and sites and tours and hyperlinks and all that fun stuff?

Tracking your travel ideas and goals can be really fun and helpful. Here's a simple way to do it:

  1. Make a List: Write down all the places you want to visit, whether it's a dream destination or a weekend getaway.
  2. Set Priorities: Decide which places are most important to you and rank them.
  3. Create a Vision Board: Collect pictures and info about your dream destinations and put them on a board or a digital folder. It's like making a visual wish list.
  4. Plan and Budget: Start planning for your next trip, even if it's in the future. Create a budget and save money for it.
  5. Use Apps: There are cool apps and websites that help you organize and track your travel plans.
  6. Stay Inspired: Follow travel blogs, watch travel shows, and keep the excitement alive.
This way, you'll stay motivated and organized to turn your travel dreams into reality. It's like having a map for your adventures!

Use apps like Google Keep, Pinterest, or TripIt to organize and track travel ideas, goals, itineraries, and recommendations.

If somebody asks me how adulthood looks like, I'll show them this post haha

In my case, the more specific and complicated the system is, the less I use it. If it's a work thing then sure, fine, I can make a habit of checking in multiple systems if I have to, but for some reason, my brain is just not wired like this when it comes to personal planning, including trips.

Some things I do to keep it simple - I'm not sure what you use except WhatsApp, so I included everything:

Browser bookmarks sorted by folder.
Basic notes app on iPhone - love how it synchronises via iCloud with Mac or iPad, plus you can collaborate on that.
Some messengers allow sending messages to your own profile - basically a chat for saved messages/links. Not a complete solution, but good for storing messenger-specific items and getting back to them fast instead of searching. Plus you can always make tags and use them in search.
Social media like Instagram also allows saving reels/related posts and putting them in dedicated collections. Good for travel inspo but also - recipes, places in your location, etc.
Finally - Google docs and drive. Sort by folders, store, share, and collaborate.
And for WhatsApp, just sorting chats by lists is fine to keep track of everything.

I know exactly what you mean — juggling WhatsApp threads can get messy! We started using Pinerary and it really helped. You can use it to organize restaurants, sights, tours, links, and photos by city, share everything with friends, and even look back on it after the trip. It keeps all your ideas in one place and honestly makes planning way more fun and stress-free!

I usually keep everything in Google Keep. I make a note for each destination and add links, photos, and must-do activities. It syncs across devices so it’s handy while traveling too.

For me I use the following apps:

1: Google notes and Google drive for offline viewing.
2: Pinterest: for finding best travle destinations.
3: Wanderlist.

I keep a big list in Notes on my phone, organized by continent and country, so it’s easy to quickly add new ideas. For trips I’m seriously planning, I move them into a separate folder with rough dates and budget ranges. I use Travel Business Class for finding good flight routes and deals whenever I'm ready to lock in tickets, especially if I'm aiming for a more comfy experience.
