Trekkers Nepal
Last reply · posted in General Travel Talk
Nepal is full of festivals, but few mix nature and faith as beautifully as Janai Purnima at Gosainkunda. Every year, on the full moon day of the Nepali month of Shrawan, thousands of pilgrims and trekkers walk high into the Langtang region to reach a sacred alpine lake. In 2026, Janai Purnima falls on Friday, August 28. If you want to see Nepal at its most spiritual, this is the trek to do.

What is Janai Purnima?

Janai Purnima is a Hindu festival of purification and renewal. On this day, Brahmin and Chhetri men change their sacred thread, called the Janai, which they wear across the chest. Priests chant mantras and tie protective threads around people's wrists. It is also celebrated as Raksha Bandhan, when sisters tie a thread on their brothers' wrists as a symbol of love and protection.

While many people celebrate this festival at local temples, the most special place to mark it is Gosainkunda, a holy lake at 4,380 meters in the Langtang region. Hindu mythology says this lake was created by Lord Shiva when he struck his trident into the mountain to bring water. Thousands of pilgrims trek here every year to take a holy dip and wash away their sins.

Why Trek to Gosainkunda for This Festival?

Trekking to Gosainkunda any time of year is a wonderful experience. But doing it during Janai Purnima adds something extra. The trail comes alive with pilgrims, sadhus (holy men), and families walking together in devotion. You will see people bathing in the icy lake, priests performing rituals, and small tea houses along the way filled with the smell of incense and the sound of prayers. It is not just a trek. It is a living festival in the mountains.

For trekkers, this is also a chance to see a side of Nepal that few tourists get to witness. You walk the same trail as generations of pilgrims before you, surrounded by snow peaks, prayer flags, and deep mountain silence.

The Trek Route

The Gosainkunda trek usually starts from Sundarijal or Dhunche, both a few hours' drive from Kathmandu. From there, the trail passes through green forests, small Tamang villages, and rhododendron woods before climbing above the tree line. Popular stops along the way include Chisapani, Kutumsang, and Laurebina, before finally reaching the holy lake.

The full trek usually takes about 7 to 9 days, depending on your route and pace. It is a moderate to challenging trek because of the high altitude, so a bit of fitness and proper acclimatization are important. Most trekkers combine the Gosainkunda lake with a visit to nearby lakes like Saraswatikunda and Bhairavkunda, since all are considered holy.

Best Time to Go

The days around Janai Purnima in August fall during the monsoon season, so trails can be wet and misty. Many pilgrims still make the journey because of the religious importance of the date. If you prefer clearer skies and drier trails, autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) are also excellent times to trek to Gosainkunda, though you will miss the festival crowd.

Simple Tips for Trekkers

  • Start early each day to avoid afternoon rain and to reach tea houses before dark.
  • Carry good rain gear and warm layers, since weather in the mountains changes fast.
  • Walk slowly and drink plenty of water to help your body adjust to the altitude.
  • Book your tea house stays or guide in advance if you are trekking during the festival, since trails get busy.
  • Respect local customs. This is a sacred pilgrimage for many, so be mindful around temples and rituals.

A Trek Worth Remembering

The Gosainkunda trek during Janai Purnima is more than just a hike. It is a chance to walk alongside pilgrims, breathe in mountain air, and witness centuries-old traditions still alive today. Whether you come for the trek, the culture, or the spiritual meaning, you will leave with memories that stay with you long after you're back home.

Ready to Experience It Yourself?

If you are planning to be in Nepal this August, do not miss this journey. Trekkers Nepal can help you plan a safe, well-guided Gosainkunda trek in time for Janai Purnima, complete with experienced local guides, comfortable stays, and a route built around your fitness level. When planning a trip, airport transportation is one of the important details to consider. Choosing a reliable airport limo service can make arriving at or departing from an airport more comfortable and less stressful.

Before booking an airport limousine, travelers should consider a few things:

  • Punctuality: Choose a service that takes pickup times and flight schedules seriously.
  • Comfort: A clean, spacious vehicle can make a difference after a long flight.
  • Transparent pricing: Check the total cost in advance and ask about any additional fees.
  • Flight tracking: Flight monitoring can help coordinate pickups when flights are delayed.
  • Professional service: Clear communication and courteous drivers can make airport transfers easier.
For travelers comparing transportation options, limo.black is one website to explore. I’m sharing this link because of my connection with the website, rather than as an independent customer recommendation.

What do you usually prefer for airport transfers: a private limousine, a rideshare service, or a regular taxi? Which factors matter most to you when booking airport transportation?

Why is there such a price difference in eSIMs for NY?

Comparing options for having internet for a week in New York, I was quite surprised by the price difference between companies.

These are some prices I've found for 7 days in the United States, with data advertised as unlimited:

- Holafly: 27,50 $

- Airalo: $25

- Ubigi: 25 $

- Roaming4You: 9,10 $

- eSIMDesti: 8,40 $

We're talking about a difference of almost $20 per week. That seems like quite a lot for a service that, in principle, aims to meet the same need.

I have a relationship with the last two companies, but precisely for that reason I am interested in learning about real experiences with other options.

Has anyone tried several of these eSIMs in the United States? Is there really that much difference in coverage, speed, or performance to justify paying three times more?

Greetings and safe travels.

When I first arrived in Abu Dhabi, I was filled with that familiar mix of excitement and curiosity that comes with exploring a new city. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque had been on my radar for months, and stepping out of the taxi onto the mosque’s grounds, I felt the scale of the place immediately. It’s massive—not just in physical size, but in the sense of presence it carries.

The first impression was almost overwhelming. From the sparkling white domes against the bright desert sky to the reflective pools that stretch around the mosque, everything seemed designed to impress. Walking closer, I found myself pausing constantly, taking in the intricate floral patterns, delicate calligraphy, and the way sunlight danced across marble surfaces. The sheer architecture scale left me awed, and there was a quiet, almost meditative energy that made it hard to do anything but stand still for a moment.

Emotionally, it hit differently than I expected. It wasn’t just beauty; it was the feeling of being in a space that was carefully, thoughtfully created to inspire reverence and reflection. Even amidst the hum of other visitors, there was a sense of calm and grandeur.

Once I recovered from my initial awe, I decided to explore on my own, at least for the first part of the visit. I wandered through the main prayer hall, admiring the massive chandeliers and the intricately woven carpets. I noticed small details that I could spend minutes on—like the subtle variations in marble patterns or the inscriptions I didn’t recognize at first glance.

Some things felt confusing at first, like the layout of the mosque’s courtyards and where photography was allowed versus restricted areas. What surprised me most was how organized everything was—dress code enforcement was strict but handled politely, and the security process was seamless, making it easy to focus on the experience rather than worry about logistics.

I also found that the best time of day made a huge difference. Visiting early in the morning meant fewer crowds, softer light for photos, and a sense of stillness that was perfect for reflection. I tried to be mindful of cultural etiquette, observing visitors removing shoes in prayer areas, speaking quietly, and moving respectfully through spaces.

As I wandered, I couldn’t help but notice the guided tour groups circulating around. Their guides were animated, pointing out symbols in the architecture and telling stories I hadn’t known. They seemed to absorb information differently, asking questions and taking notes, while I was mostly marveling at what I could see with my eyes. I overheard explanations about historical context, the significance of calligraphy, and the symbolism embedded in the domes and columns.

Reflecting on the visit, I can see clear pros and cons to each approach. Self-guided exploration gives freedom—you can linger, take photos, and experience the mosque at your own pace. But you might miss layers of meaning that a guide can highlight. On the other hand, guided tours provide rich cultural depth and context, saving time by pointing you directly to the most meaningful areas. They also help with time management and understanding subtle nuances, especially if you’re short on time or visiting Abu Dhabi as part of a larger city tour. Transportation convenience is neutral either way, as the mosque is easy to reach, but guided tours often include pickup options, which can simplify logistics.

My honest take? If you love moving at your own pace, soaking in the atmosphere, and reflecting quietly, a solo visit works beautifully. But if you want to truly understand the cultural significance and hear stories you might otherwise miss, a guided experience adds a lot of value.

If I were to visit again, I think I would combine both: start self-guided to absorb the grandeur and quiet, then join a guided portion to gain deeper insights. That balance seems perfect for a full Abu Dhabi cultural experience.

For those planning their visit, I’m curious:

Did you prefer exploring the mosque on your own or following a guide?

Were there details or stories you learned from a guide that made the visit more memorable?

How did the timing of your visit (morning vs afternoon) affect your experience?

I’d love to hear how others approached their mosque tour and what tips you have for making the most of it.

Planning a Dubai desert safari for the first time? There are several different types of desert experiences, so it helps to understand what is included before booking.

Where does the desert safari take place?

Many Dubai desert safari experiences visit the desert areas outside the city, including the red dunes around Lahbab. The landscape is very different from central Dubai, with wide open dunes and opportunities for activities such as dune bashing, camel riding and sandboarding.

What is usually included?

An evening desert safari commonly includes 4×4 transportation, dune bashing, a camel experience and sandboarding. Depending on the package, visitors may also have dinner at a desert camp, with entertainment such as Tanoura, belly dancing and a fire show.

Morning vs evening safari

A morning safari is useful for travelers who mainly want desert activities and have other plans later in the day. An evening safari generally combines the desert experience with sunset, a camp visit and dinner.

Private vs shared safari

Shared tours can be suitable for travelers who don't need a private vehicle. A private safari provides more flexibility for pickup and the itinerary.

If you're comparing different Dubai desert safari options, Desert Leap Safari has information about the available experiences, timings and inclusions on its website:

The major purpose fulfilled by the Palace of Fine Arts is its hosting of remarkable exhibitions related to the arts. Millions of tourists from across the globe visit this water facing Palace annually. I also explored with Bookbustours llc and that was a worthy life experience for me. Hence, it's not a center of attraction merely to the locals but all tourists love visiting here and taking photographs. It's the best place to take pictures for newlyweds and honeymoon couples in its open spaces and beautiful architecture.

Finding the right place to stay can make your Kanha National Park trip more comfortable and enjoyable. If you are planning a kanha jungle safari, look for hotels, resorts, or lodges near the Khatia, Mukki, or Sarhi gates, depending on your safari permit. Khatia is a convenient choice for visitors exploring the Kisli side, while Mukki is popular among wildlife lovers who prefer staying close to the forest. Sarhi is another option for travellers looking for a quieter stay.

When choosing accommodation, check the distance from your safari gate, room facilities, food options, and transport availability. Booking your stay in advance is especially helpful during the peak wildlife season. If you are searching for the best places to stay near Kanha safari gates, compare a few properties before making your reservation to enjoy a relaxed and hassle-free wildlife holiday.

Yes, you can visit Chuka Beach and Pilibhit Tiger Reserve on the same trip. Both places are popular attractions in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh, and are a great choice for nature lovers, families, and wildlife enthusiasts. You can enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Chuka Beach, relax near the Sharda Sagar Dam, and explore the forest during a jungle safari.

If you are planning a Pilibhit Tiger Reserve trip, it is best to keep at least two days for a comfortable experience. You can visit Chuka Beach on one day and plan your tiger reserve safari on the same day or the next morning, depending on your schedule and safari availability. Before travelling, check the latest safari timings and entry rules.
