What is the best winter sport? Definitely skiing. But the truth is that Glasgow is a proper city, not a mountain area. There are no natural ski resorts or real ski slopes within the city, and the terrain just isn’t suitable. Winter here is usually cold and wet, with occasional snow, but it’s unpredictable and doesn’t last long enough for skiing. What’s your best solution if you want to ski nearby?
Which university are you studying at in Glasgow? You can go skiing from Glasgow's student accommodation, either as a day trip or a weekend trip. It’s relatively close to the Scottish Highlands, which means proper ski resorts are reachable compared to most other UK cities.
Popular ski resorts near Glasgow include:
Glencoe Mountain Resort
Around 2–2.5 hours from Glasgow
One of the most well-known ski resorts in the UK. When snow conditions are good, you can ski or snowboard here.
Nevis Range (near Fort William)
About 3 hours away
Longer runs and amazing scenery. A lot of students prefer this one if they’re going for a full day or weekend.
Cairngorm Mountain (a bit further)
Roughly 3.5–4 hours from Glasgow
Better suited for a weekend trip rather than a quick day out.
What if there’s no snow, or if you don’t want to go too far?
In this case, there is a range of indoor skiing parks in Glasgow. For additional options, you can choose Ice skating as basically a winter staple here.
Indoor skiing / dry slopes
Bellahouston Ski & Snowboard Centre
This one is inside Glasgow.
It’s a dry slope (artificial surface), mainly used for practicing skiing and snowboarding.
A lot of university ski and snowboard societies train here regularly, especially before trips to the Highlands or abroad.
Snow Factor (Braehead)
Located just outside Glasgow, inside the Braehead shopping centre.
This is a real indoor snow slope, open all year round.
Many students learn to ski or snowboard here for the first time, even if they’ve never seen real snow before.
Here are some popular Ice skating sites for students to take part in.

- Braehead Ice Centre – probably the most popular one with students
- Kelvin Hall Ice Rink – right in the city, easy to get to
- Sometimes there are seasonal ice rinks in the city centre during winter events
