Amritsar was probably my favourite stop on this route. The Golden Temple looks beautiful, especially in the evening, and the langar experience is worth having. I booked my North India trip with Boketto Travels, and they helped coordinate the hotel stays and transfers between Delhi, Amritsar, Dharamshala and Shimla. One suggestion: don't rush through Dharamshala just to reach Shimla. Spend some time around McLeod Ganj and try the local Tibetan food. There's quite a different atmosphere there compared to the other cities.
