Things Nobody Tells You About Travelling to Paris for the First Time

I've been based in Paris for years and I still see the same mistakes from first-time visitors. A few honest tips from someone on the ground every day:
  1. CDG is bigger than you expect. Terminals are not connected on foot. Give yourself more time than you think you need between connections.
  2. The RER B train is cheap but stressful with luggage. Especially at rush hour or with kids. It's fine for solo travellers light on bags — not ideal for families.
  3. Paris traffic is unpredictable. Build buffer time into any journey, especially early morning or late afternoon.
  4. Most Parisians speak English in tourist areas. Don't be afraid to ask for help — people are generally friendlier than the stereotype suggests.
  5. Book transport in advance. Whether it's airport transfers, train tickets, or tours — things sell out and prices go up closer to the date.
Happy to answer any questions about getting around Paris or the airports. What's been your biggest travel headache arriving in France?

Thanks for sharing these practical tips! They’re really useful for anyone visiting Paris for the first time. I especially agree about allowing extra time at CDG Airport and booking transport in advance. Those small steps can make the trip much less stressful. Thankfully, I haven't had any major issues arriving in France, but navigating a large airport after a long flight can definitely be tiring. Looking forward to reading more tips from experienced travelers like you.
