Spain itinerary advice needed – 4 days based in Barcelona

I have 4 days in Spain and am considering staying mostly in Barcelona. Rather than checking off famous sights, I’d like to experience places that locals and repeat visitors love.

If you had only 4 days, how would you spend them?

Would you:

Stay all 4 days in Barcelona?
Add Girona?
Visit Montserrat?
Spend a night in Valencia?
Choose another nearby destination?

I’m interested in authentic neighborhoods, food, culture, scenic walks, and memorable experiences rather than rushing between cities.

A quick follow-up while planning this trip.

Since I only have four days, I'm trying to balance seeing a lot without spending too much time on transportation. My current thinking is:

Day 1: Explore Barcelona and get an overall feel for the city.
Day 2: Focus on a few neighborhoods and local food spots.
Day 3: Either Girona or Montserrat.
Day 4: Open day for anything I discover along the way.

For those who have been recently, what's the best way to get an overview of Barcelona in a short time? Do you prefer public transport, walking, guided tours, hop-on hop-off buses, or something else?

I'd love to hear what worked best for you.

If I had only 4 days, I’d avoid rushing between cities and focus on experiencing Catalonia properly. Barcelona itself can easily fill your trip if you explore beyond the usual attractions.

I’d spend time walking through neighborhoods like Gràcia and El Born, enjoy local cafés, try traditional food, and take slow evening walks around the city. The best memories often come from small streets and local experiences rather than just famous landmarks.

I’d definitely add a day trip to Montserrat, which is perfect for nature, views, and a peaceful break. Girona is another wonderful choice with charming old streets and a different atmosphere.

Valencia is a beautiful city, but for a short 4-day trip, I’d save it for another visit. A Barcelona-focused itinerary with one nearby escape will feel much more relaxed and rewarding.

I think your plan of staying mainly in Barcelona with one day trip is the right balance. In my experience, the famous attractions are definitely worth visiting, but the most memorable moments often come from exploring the city beyond the usual spots.
