Self-Camping on Ha Giang Loop: Logistics, Costs, and Tips

I just finished a 4-day solo camping trip on the Ha Giang Loop. Most people do the guesthouse route, but if you want to save money and find some real solitude, wild camping Ha Giang is possible. Here’s the practical breakdown for anyone considering it.

Honda Blade camping setup
The Gear: You need a waterproof tent and a sleeping bag rated for at least 5°C. The humidity and night chill are no joke. Rent a semi-auto (I used a Honda Blade) from shops like QT Motorbikes in Ha Giang City. Costs: Bike rental ~200k VND/day, fuel ~30k/day, food ~100k/day. Total cost is significantly lower than staying in guesthouses if you have your own gear.

Finding Spots: Finding flat ground is the hardest part of Ha Giang Loop self-camping. Avoid private farms unless you ask permission. Look for side tracks leading away from the main road towards rivers or abandoned plots. Always find your spot before sunset! I recommend checking my Ha Giang itinerary guide for route ideas.

Safety: The roads are dangerous. If you aren't an experienced rider, don't camp—the extra weight makes the bike harder to handle. Carry your Ha Giang permit and passport at all times. For those who prefer a roof, here are the best Ha Giang homestays. Happy riding!
