Planning a trip to Ha Long Bay? This spectacular UNESCO site can be a dream or a crowded tourist trap, depending entirely on your planning. Here is a quick guide to navigating the bay in 2026.

Bay landscape
Before you book your trip and look over the top sights in Ha Long Bay, you need to understand how to select the right routes and avoid common pitfalls.

1. Cruise Smarter: Lan Ha & Bai Tu Long

The central zone of Ha Long Bay is highly congested with tour boats. For a quieter experience, choose an overnight cruise that visits Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay. For a selection of reliable vessels, consult this guide to the best cruises.

An overnight stay of 2 days and 1 night on a mid-range boat, like a 2-day Lan Ha Bay cruise, is the sweet spot. Avoid budget cruises under $100, which often feature subpar food and poor safety standards.

2. Eat Local in Hon Gai

Skip the overpriced restaurants in commercial Bai Chay. Instead, cross the bridge to Hon Gai and sample Goc Bang, a local spot down Ngo Nha Hat alley serving fresh Cha Muc (squid cake) with steamed rice rolls. For local shopping, check out Ha Long 1 Market. You can read more about what to eat in this Ha Long food guide.

3. Hiking Views and Kayaking

  • Ti Top Island: Hiking Ti Top Island offers great views, but the 400 stone steps are steep and crowded. Sturdy shoes are required.
  • Poem Mountain: Note that Poem Mountain is officially closed due to safety risks.
  • Luon Cave: When visiting Luon Cave, rent a kayak to paddle through the water tunnel into the quiet inner lagoon. Keep your distance from the cliff monkeys.

4. Logistics and Weather

To reach the bay, book a reliable Limousine Van via 12Go Asia for a 2.5-hour ride from Hanoi. Avoid 1-day day trips, which involve too much transit time on the highway. Spend at least one night near the bay. The best weather is from October to December. Avoid August due to typhoon risks.

If you are planning an extended tour, check out this 2-week northern Vietnam itinerary to see how to connect the bay with Sapa and Ninh Binh.
