Hey everyone,
I just finished applying for the Australian 462 Visa – officially known as the Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462) – and thought I’d share what I learned during the process. Before applying, I read tons of articles and still got confused by conflicting information, so here’s my honest, straightforward experience.
But it’s not just a “go there and work” visa — it’s designed for people who genuinely want to explore Australia while funding their trip.
They mainly want to know:

Some friends waited up to 3 weeks, especially if they had to complete the health check or submit missing documents.

1. Know What This Visa Really Means
The Work and Holiday visa lets young people (18–30 years old) work and travel in Australia for up to 12 months. But it’s not just a “go there and work” visa — it’s designed for people who genuinely want to explore Australia while funding their trip.
Many people misunderstand and think it’s just a working visa, but you’ll get better results if your application shows both travel and cultural exchange purposes.
- You can work for one employer for up to 6 months.
- You can study for up to 4 months.
- You can travel in and out of Australia multiple times.
2. Documents You’ll Need
From my personal experience, these were the key documents they actually looked at:- Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)
- Bank statement (with enough savings to support your first months)
- Proof of education (diploma or university transcript)
- English test result (IELTS or equivalent)
- Health check (you’ll get a request after submission)
- Passport-sized photo
- Form 1208 (official application form)
3. Financial Proof – What They Really Check
You don’t need to show a huge amount, but it must look realistic. They mainly want to know:
- You can afford to arrive, rent accommodation, and live for a few weeks before finding work.
- The source of your money is legitimate (avoid sudden large deposits).
4. Purpose of Travel Letter
Even though it’s not always required, I highly recommend writing a short statement (half a page) explaining why you want to visit Australia, what you plan to do, and what you expect to learn. It doesn’t have to be fancy — just honest. Mine focused on:
- Cultural exchange and outdoor experience
- Improving English and independence
- Exploring regional Australia through short-term work
5. Processing Time
My application took 10 working days to get approved. Some friends waited up to 3 weeks, especially if they had to complete the health check or submit missing documents.
