I almost bought tea inside Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子) by packaging alone. Then a quieter tip helped: leave the scenic strip and ask origin, grade, and for a short taste before you commit.
I did that at 峨眉雪芽雪儿姐茶坊(宽窄巷子店) / Emei Xueya Xue'erjie Tea Shop (Kuanzhai Alley branch), 成都市金牛区西安南路140号附2号 / No. 140-2 Xi'an South Road, Jinniu District, Chengdu, open 09:00-22:00. Metro Line 4, Kuanzhai Alley Station (宽窄巷子站) Exit D, about 100-200 m on a neighborhood street outside the strip.
Emei Xueya (峨眉雪芽) felt light and clean for me; Mengding Gan Lu (蒙顶甘露) a bit softer. Jasmine Piao Xue (茉莉飘雪) is flower-scented, so it is a different ask if you wanted a plain green. A small loose bag beat a gift box I might never finish.
If you pass Kuanzhai Alley, it is worth stopping at Emei Xueya Xue'erjie Tea Shop to taste a cup and pick a small bag before you buy anything bigger. What do you usually ask first when buying Sichuan tea in Chengdu: origin, grade, or just taste?
