Route Almaty – Charyn Canyon – Issyk-Kul – Bishkek: Looking for tips

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a trip through Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan and would love to hear your tips or experiences. My rough itinerary looks like this:

Start in Almaty Side trip to Charyn Canyon Possibly continue to Altyn-Emel National Park Cross the border at Karkara Around Issyk-Kul Lake (e.g. stop at Fairytale Canyon / Skazka) Finally on to Bishkek

My questions:

Which stops along this route are really worth it? Does anyone have recent experience with the Karkara border crossing? What’s the best way to get around – marshrutkas, taxis, or hiring a driver? Any recommendations for accommodation (especially for solo travelers)? Anything I should be particularly aware of as a solo female traveler in my 30s?

I’d really appreciate any kind of advice – from practical transport/accommodation info to personal impressions or hidden gems.

Thanks a lot in advance
Marlene

If you love nature, Kazakhstan is amazing for solo travelers. The areas around Almaty were my favorite. I posted a few notes from my trip on situs-bosslot.com — might help with planning.

Hi Marlene,

Your travel plan looks amazing! I travelled through the Almaty–Issyk-Kul–Bishkek route, and the nature here is truly incredible.

Charyn Canyon is definitely worth visiting, especially early in the morning or around sunset. If you have extra time, Altyn-Emel National Park is also beautiful, but it requires more time because of the distance.

For Issyk-Kul, I highly recommend visiting Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon. The landscapes there are unique and beautiful. The southern shore of Issyk-Kul is quieter and great for experiencing nature.

You can check Best Time to Visit Central Asia once to understand the best season and weather conditions, which will help you plan your trip better.

The Karkara border crossing is a good option, but check the latest updates before travelling as border rules can change. For transportation, shared taxis or hiring a driver can be more convenient because some places are far from public transport routes. Marshrutkas are a cheaper option, but they may take more time.

For solo travel, choose well-reviewed guesthouses/hostels and arrange transportation through trusted sources. People in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are generally very welcoming, but it’s better to avoid travelling alone in remote areas late at night.

Wishing you a great trip. Central Asia is a truly beautiful region!

Hi Marlene,

Your itinerary is very realistic, and I'd definitely keep the southern shore of Issyk-Kul if you have enough time. It's much quieter than the north and offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the region.

A few suggestions from my experience:

  • Spend at least one night near Charyn Canyon if possible. The canyon is much less crowded early in the morning and at sunset.
  • If you visit Altyn-Emel, don't miss the Singing Dune. It's one of the park's highlights, but you'll need a full day to explore the area.
  • Between Karakol and Bokonbayevo, there are several yurt camps where you can experience traditional Kyrgyz hospitality. They're a great alternative to standard guesthouses.
  • Shared taxis are usually the most practical option between towns. Marshrutkas are cheaper but less flexible if you want to stop at viewpoints along the way.
As a solo female traveler, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are generally considered safe. Like anywhere else, just use normal precautions, especially when arriving late at night or arranging transport.

It looks like a fantastic trip—I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
