Route Almaty – Charyn Canyon – Issyk-Kul – Bishkek: Looking for tips

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a trip through Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan and would love to hear your tips or experiences. My rough itinerary looks like this:

Start in Almaty Side trip to Charyn Canyon Possibly continue to Altyn-Emel National Park Cross the border at Karkara Around Issyk-Kul Lake (e.g. stop at Fairytale Canyon / Skazka) Finally on to Bishkek

My questions:

Which stops along this route are really worth it? Does anyone have recent experience with the Karkara border crossing? What’s the best way to get around – marshrutkas, taxis, or hiring a driver? Any recommendations for accommodation (especially for solo travelers)? Anything I should be particularly aware of as a solo female traveler in my 30s?

I’d really appreciate any kind of advice – from practical transport/accommodation info to personal impressions or hidden gems.

Thanks a lot in advance
Marlene

If you love nature, Kazakhstan is amazing for solo travelers. The areas around Almaty were my favorite. I posted a few notes from my trip on situs-bosslot.com — might help with planning.
