NYC to Boston as a Group: Day Trip

I’m looking for advice on doing Boston as a day trip from New York City, but I’d rather avoid the big coach tours. I keep seeing day trips that look like full buses, and I’m hoping there are options that feel more like a small group even if it’s a van or a capped group size and still give you enough time to actually walk around and see a few classic areas. Has anyone here done this as a same day trip and felt like it was enjoyable, not rushed? I’m also open to doing it on my own by train and then joining a local walking tour once I get to Boston, but I’m not sure how realistic that is time wise if I want to be back in NYC the same evening. Any recent experiences suggestions would really help.

Totally doable, but it’ll feel rushed unless you take the very first Amtrak up and a late train back, then stick to a tight area like Back Bay to Common to Beacon Hill for an easy walk. If you want the small group feel without the big coach vibe, I’ve seen people rent a private van from Blue Nile Livery on the Boston side and pair it with a Boston Logan Car Service pickup to save time getting in and out of the city.
