1. Getting There: Full Day vs. The Journey
- Machu Picchu Full Day: If you're short on time, this is your option. It's a grueling but rewarding day, often involving a 3-4 AM start from Cusco, a drive/van ride to Ollantaytambo, a train to Aguas Calientes, and finally the bus up to the site. It's fast, but you'll be exhausted. Group tours for a Machu Picchu Full Day start around $270 - $350 USD for foreign adults in 2025, which typically includes transport, train, bus, and the main entrance ticket.
- The Trekking Experience (The Best Way!): If you can, take a few days. The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is an iconic 4-day hike, but permits are extremely limited and you must book 6+ months ahead. - Humantay Lake: A stunning turquoise lake, usually easier and less crowded than Rainbow Mountain.
- Alpaca Farm: While traveling the Sacred Valley, make sure to stop at a local textile center or alpaca farm to see the animals up close and learn about the weaving process. It’s a wonderful cultural stop!

4. Things to AVOID as a Foreign Visitor
To guarantee a great experience, heed these warnings:- Don't Buy Tickets Last Minute: Machu Picchu tickets, especially the mountain hikes, sell out months in advance. Book online as soon as your dates are firm.
- Don't Rush Acclimatization: Cusco is high (3,400m / 11,200ft). Spend your first 2-3 days taking it slow, drinking coca tea, and avoiding heavy meals. Never go straight to a tough hike like Rainbow Mountain on Day 1.
- Don't Lose Your Passport: You need your physical passport to enter Machu Picchu and to board the train. No exceptions!
- Avoid Large Backpacks/Selfie Sticks: No bags larger than 40x35x20 cm are allowed inside the citadel. No selfie sticks or tripods are permitted either. Leave them at the hotel or use the lockers outside.
- Don't Eat/Smoke Inside: Eating, smoking, or vaping is strictly prohibited inside the ruins. Stick to the designated routes and be respectful!
