So, you’ve finally got your CAS, your bags are half-packed, and you’re probably spending your evenings watching "vlogs" of people drinking lattes in Notting Hill. It’s a brilliant feeling, isn’t it? The dream of living in the Big Smoke is finally happening.
But, if I’m being 100% honest with you, there’s one part of the move that usually turns everyone’s hair a bit grey before they even step off the plane.
If you're studying anywhere near the Strand or the Southbank, make sure you check out the little food markets tucked away behind the Royal Festival Hall. It’s much more "local" than the tourist traps, and the grilled cheese sandwiches are basically a religious experience.
We’ve all had those late-night sessions, refreshing a dozen tabs and wondering why everything is so pricey. My biggest tip? Don't just look at the shiny photos. Think about the Tube line. If you can find a spot in Borough or Elephant & Castle, you can often just walk or hop on a bus to uni. Trust me, avoiding the morning "sardine" experience on the Underground is the best gift you can give yourself.

"Main Character" Moments
Don't get me wrong, London is everything they say it is. There’s nothing like that first time you walk across Waterloo Bridge at night when the city lights are reflecting in the Thames. It’s free, it’s iconic, and it makes you feel like you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.If you're studying anywhere near the Strand or the Southbank, make sure you check out the little food markets tucked away behind the Royal Festival Hall. Housing Mission
Here’s the thing: everyone talks about the museums and the pubs, but nobody really warns you about the absolute scramble for student housing in London until you’re actually in the thick of it. It’s one of those things where you’re so busy romanticising the red buses that the practical side—like finding a room that isn't the size of a cupboard—sort of slips your mind. We’ve all had those late-night sessions, refreshing a dozen tabs and wondering why everything is so pricey. A Few Things I Wish I Knew
- The "Yellow Sticker" Ritual: Get to your local Sainsbury’s around 7 or 8 PM. That’s when the magic happens—half-price sandwiches and sushi. It’s how we all survive the final week before the next allowance hits.
- Railcards are Life: Spend the £30 to get a 16-25 Railcard. It knocks a third off your train fares, and you can even link it to your Oyster card. It’s basically free money.
- Hampstead Heath > The Parks: If the city feels too loud, take the Overground to Hampstead. It’s huge, wild, and you can see the whole skyline from Parliament Hill.
