I dream of visiting Kerala, a land renowned for its mountains, traditional foods, and holy sites. I previously traveled to India and visited Kainchi Dham. This time, I’ve booked an India tour package to explore Kerala’s rich heritage and natural beauty. I am excited to experience its unique culture, spiritual places, and scenic landscapes, making my upcoming trip a memorable adventure.

Kerala is lovely, especially if you leave some room for unplanned stops instead of rushing from one place to another. I spent a couple of days around Munnar, stopping at tea stalls along the way, then went to Alleppey for a backwater ride before heading to Fort Kochi. I booked the trip with Boketto Travels, with the Munnar stay, a night near the backwaters and the drive to Kochi all part of the itinerary. Fort Kochi was a different vibe altogether, with its old buildings, little cafés and Chinese fishing nets by the water. And don’t skip the local food. Appam with stew and Kerala fish curry were two things I kept going back for!

hat sounds like an incredible trip! Kerala (often called "God's Own Country") has a unique charm that balances tranquil landscapes with deep cultural and spiritual roots. Since you are interested in mountains, local heritage, spiritual sites, and traditional foods, here are a few recommendations to help you make the most of your itinerary:

1. Scenic Mountain Escapes & Tea Plantations

  • Munnar: Famous for its rolling tea estates, mist-covered valleys, and cool climate. Don't miss a stroll through the tea gardens or a visit to Eravikulam National Park (home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr).
  • Wayanad: Located in northern Kerala, Wayanad offers lush spice plantations, waterfalls, and ancient caves like the Edakkal Caves, which feature prehistoric petroglyphs.

2. Spiritual Sites & Heritage

  • Guruvayur Temple & Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple: Two of Kerala’s most iconic Hindu temples, known for their stunning Dravidian architecture and deep-rooted traditions. (Note: Check dress code guidelines prior to visiting, as non-Hindus or specific attire restrictions may apply in inner sanctums).
  • Sabaimala & Chottanikkara Devi Temple: Excellent stops if you are interested in famous pilgrimage traditions and temple rituals.
  • Fort Kochi: A historic coastal district showcasing a fascinating mix of Dutch, Portuguese, British, and Chinese influences, famous for its historic churches (like St. Francis Church) and iconic Chinese Fishing Nets.

3. Backwaters & Culture

  • Alleppey (Alappuzha) / Kumarakom: A stay on a traditional Kerala houseboat (Kettuvallam) along the palm-fringed backwaters is an absolute must-do experience.
  • Cultural Performances: Try to watch a live Kathakali (dance-drama) performance or a demonstration of Kalaripayattu (one of the world's oldest martial arts).

4. Must-Try Local Cuisine

  • Breakfast: Fresh Appam (fermented rice pancakes) served with vegetable or chicken stew, or Puttu with Kadala (chana) curry.
  • Meals: Traditional Kerala Sadya—an elaborate vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf during festivals or special occasions—and authentic Kerala-style Fish Curry (Meen Curry) cooked with coconut milk and spices.
Wishing you a wonderful and enriching journey through Kerala! Safe travels!
