What's Hemis Festival'?

The Hemis Festival is celebrated in honour of the sage, Padmasambhava also known as Guru Rimpoche. Rimpoches are believed to be reincarnations of Lord Buddha. This festival celebrates his birthday. The festival takes place in Hemis Gompa, the largest and richest Buddhist monastery in Ladakh.

The reason to celebrate it: On this day, a ritual is followed by the people of Ladakh. They wear colorful masks, dance and celebrate the festival with great fervor. One of the prime attractions of the festival is the mask dance performed by the Lamas of the Hemis Monastery. The dance illustrates the victory of good over the evil.
