A waterfall is a section of a river or stream where the water drops abruptly or vertically. Waterfalls can be created when melting ice spills over the edge of a tabular iceberg or ice shelf. Typically, a river will cut through a layer of hard bedrock before collapsing into softer rock. The softer rock will erode more quickly, producing steeper falls. Here are some of the tallest waterfalls in the United States.
