How does American Airlines Cancellation Policy work if I need to cancel my flight?

The American Airlines Cancellation Policy is an excellent provision to allow flyers flexibility when canceling or changing a flight. Here's just how it works:

24-Hour Cancellation Policy:
Through its good-guy services, American Airlines will let you cancel your flight free of charge within 24 hours from booking. This is possible if the ticket is purchased at least two days before scheduled departure. All of American's fare types qualify, including Basic Economy tickets.

Refundable vs. Non-Refundable Tickets:

  1. Refundable Tickets: In case of having a refundable ticket, you are allowed to cancel your flight at any time prior to a scheduled departure, and you will receive 100% full reimbursement in your original form of payment.
  2. Non-Refundable Tickets: You are not going to have a refund in cases of non-refundable tickets; however, you will receive credit for traveling once more after deducting roughly $200 of cancellation fees if it is a domestic flight, and you can use the credit within a year.
  3. Basic Economy Tickets: Most often these tickets cannot be cancelled or altered. However, the good news is that cancellation is still possible within the 24 hours for full refund.

Cancellation on Day of Travel: It follows that in case of cancellation of the booking due on the day of traveling, then the cancellation charge would be much higher, especially if you are holding a non-refundable ticket.

Cancellation by American Airlines: In case American Airlines decides to cancel or changes your flight significantly, then in any case you may ask for a full refund irrespective of the ticket type that you may be holding.

Flight cancellations can be directly requested through the official American Airlines website, the mobile application, or you can call up the customer service. And double-check the terms of the ticket you purchased to avoid overpayment with unnecessary fees.
