The Marangu route is one of the primary routes used to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. It is also known as the “Coca-Cola” route due to its relatively well-developed infrastructure compared to other routes. Starting at Marangu Gate (1,870 meters/6,135 feet), the route covers approximately 72 kilometers (45 miles) round trip.
Overall, the Marangu route is a great option for climbers who prefer a more straightforward and comfortable trek, with less emphasis on camping and more on hut accommodation. However, climbers should still be well-prepared, physically fit, and mentally ready to tackle the challenges of climbing Africa’s highest peak.
The journey takes you through diverse landscapes, including lush rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts, before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters/19,341 feet). The elevation gain is significant, but the gradual incline helps with acclimatization, contributing to a higher success rate of around 80%. Key overnight stops include Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut, and Kibo Hut.
